Final Post

Phones have had a very positive and negative effect on my life. I’ve been working in the music industry for 7 years now as both a music consultant and an artist. Having phones has made this job so much easier and convenient because it is so easy to get ahold of people nowadays because we are all connected. It has also made it easier than ever to discover and help develop new talent from all parts of the earth, for example from the comfort of my room I am helping manage a singer from London’s rebranding campaign and helping her redevelop her sound all from my bed room in Cincinnati Ohio. We are more connected than ever in today’s world but that also comes with a heavy price.

Being as connected as we are has its downsides without a doubt. As a young kid I was exposed to a lot of cyber bullying through facebook because I had a big dream of making it in the music industry and people attacked me for it. I would post something I had worked on and it got shared around between people in a negative way and would go into school and not only did my friend group know about my project but so did everyone else and I would go weeks at a time being made fun of online and in person for it. This interconnectedness means that everyone truly does and know or will find out about everything there is to know about you without having spoken a single word to you. Interconnectedness in my opinion has gone alittle too far. I feel this way because apps like “Snapchat” have a separate page where you can see where exactly your friends are at all times which there are its advantages but I’ve mainly seen or heard about disadvantages. The main disadvantage for this that I’ve seen countless times is when a girlfriend or boyfriend doesn’t respond the other partner will go on “Snapmap” and see exactly where their significant other is and confront them. This to me helps promote unhealthy behavior and trust issues which is shaping the way our society is handling relationships.

This snapchat feature isn’t all bad though as many people use it to find their friends after a long night out and you got to collect all the stragglers. We actually used this feature for a friend that was in from out of town and got lost and in that case it was very helpful and has a lot of potential to be a useful tool.

If I had to analyze my own relationship with technology I would say that there are two ways to answer this question “professionally” and “personally”. Professionally I feel like my relationship with technology has been pretty healthy I use it to mainly discover new artists and reach out to them. I also use it to promote my own music through social media such as “Instagram”, “Facebook”, “Twitter”. These are my main uses for social media both personally and professionally. Personally I love to text and always respond super quick which I am trying to work on not doing because I want to spend more time away from my phone and other screens because as of right now I am on my phone an unhealthy amount. It is always in my face and I just get so caught up in things.

Technologies even though it is helpful can also being very misleading. A lot of fake news stuff gets posted and spread through social media. This is because a lot of people can post whatever they want without being checked and there are some people out there that believe anything they read and spread that around and it starts this terrible pattern of fake news and everything just becomes a confusing mess of misinformation.

In conclusion I think there are so many benefits to social media and phones but out also comes with its fair share of downsides and disadvantages. Depression has increased due to social media because people are spending their whole day looking at other peoples lives wishing it was their own.
