Today I would like to talk about "Marketplace of Ideas". Marketplace of ideas was an idea first introduced by Milton who said "when truth and falsehood are allowed to freely grapple, the truth will win out". This statement has so much truth behind it especially during great times of crisis like the one we are all in right now with this pandemic. This statement he made because he didn't believe that people should need to have a license to print or publish their ideas. The idea is that the truth so factual sources will always beat out the sources that are spreading false information but people have the right to be able to say whatever they want to. With this pandemic we have all seen a good amount of false information being spread around with the intention of selling products which it goes crazy at first but these pages and people are always put in check but reputable sources that are standing up for the people and making sure everyone is properly informed about situations. This widespread sort of issue is more common nowadays because of social media such as Facebook or Instagram where everyone essentially has a blog to spread whatever things they have on their mind. Social media has really over the past couple years taken over things such as publications because instead of going to the store and getting a magazine or news source we can all access them whenever we want through our phones in seconds.

Ted Talks

In the first Ted Talk video I watched it started out by focusing on tattoos which was interesting because he talked about how tattoos tell stories. He then linked tattoos to Facebook and other social media sites called them "electronic tattoos". He then brought up how our stuff saves our data from location to even facial recognition and pulled up an example of a photo taken with an iPhone and how the phone just based on the picture was able to tell you who was who. U.S. Supreme Court

There have only been alittle over 100 supreme court justices. There are only nine at a time assigned and they are assigned by the president. The supreme court justices will alot of times stay in their position decades after the president that appointed them has left office. They on average serve 16 years which if you think about it is on average through the time of 4 different presidential terms. The Supreme court receives on average 100 new cases a week. Most of these are petitions to get decisions made by lower courts overturned because the person does not feel that the right choice was made in their case. These in one year tend to add up to around 7,000 and out of those they might only get to about 100 a week. Each justice is responsible for deciding for each case. The justices meet weekly in conference to decide which of the cases to accept. Facebook Users Phone Numbers

Awhile ago on Facebook you used to be able to look up people and find them using just their phone number. This was a convenient way of finding someone that you didn't know their last name. All the phone numbers of the users were stored on a database which since has been taken offline. In going offline you would think that you would not be able to find these numbers and information anywhere but that is where you are wrong. The database and all its contents have been leaked online and is fairly easy to find. This causes a great deal of issues with people committing fraud and other types of crimes. The leaking of this data is a massive invasion of privacy because all of the information is supposed to be confidential and secure. It was even to the point that even Facebooks co-founder Chris Hughes became a victim of this.
