U.S. Supreme Court

There have only been alittle over 100 supreme court justices. There are only nine at a time assigned and they are assigned by the president. The supreme court justices will alot of times stay in their position decades after the president that appointed them has left office. They on average serve 16 years which if you think about it is on average through the time of 4 different presidential terms.

The Supreme court receives on average 100 new cases a week. Most of these are petitions to get decisions made by lower courts overturned because the person does not feel that the right choice was made in their case. These in one year tend to add up to around 7,000 and out of those they might only get to about 100 a week. Each justice is responsible for deciding for each case. The justices meet weekly in conference to decide which of the cases to accept. Every time they meet to discuss they shake hands because even though they might not agree on the cases it is easier to not hold a grudge if you have touched that person.

One thing that was very interesting to me about all of this is when people go to DC they can actually pay to sit in on some of the sessions for the cases that had been accepted. One issue with this is people would not have heard the rest of the dialogue before hand so they will not fully understand that a lot of conversation happened around these cases.
